Appliqué

Shadow Appliqué I

Shadow appliqué is worked in the same way as shadow quilting, a layer of coloured fabric is applied between layers of transparent fabrics.

In this sample, pieces of coloured pelmet Vilene are placed between layers of red and green silk organdie. It is interesting to see the way the colours of the organdie merge together, could try space dying the organdie as well as the Vilene.

Shadow Appliqué II

Here a design has been cut out of paper lame using a pyrography tool and sandwiched between layers of crystal organza. In some places the top layer of organza has been burnt back to let more of the colour below shine through.

The stitching has been done with on the machine using a very small zigzag stitch.
